College & Scholarship Announcements

Scholarships available through the military

Members of the U.S. military provide vital protection that keeps the nation safe, and they garner a great deal of respect from civilians for their service to the country.  Aside from the pride they take in their work, military service men and women are also rewarded with financial support for college and other training endeavors under the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Montgomery GI Bill.  Along with these standard benefits, military service members, and often their spouses and family members, are also often eligible for military scholarships offered from chartiable organizations and other resources.  In addition, scholarships are also available to high school and college students through the various branches of the ROTC, but may have service requirements attached to them.

Health Professionals Scholarship Program - Air Force
FOR GRADUATE SCHOOL:  The military needs doctors, but there are a number of undeniable reasons doctors would rather work in a civilian capactiy, including pay, risks associated with warfare, and lack of freedome associated with assignments to bases, etc.  To overcome these drawbacks, the govenment is willing to pay for the professional educaiton of qualified individuals in rturn for their professional services.  In other words, they will pay your way through medical school if you are willing to work for them for as many years later one.  -  excerpt from a blog by Luke Ballard.  For more information from Mr. Ballard's perspective, follow this

Scholarship Basics

Receiving a college scholarship can make the difference between attending a college you can afford and attending a college you love.  Scholarships are a valuable part of a student's financial aid because there are so many scholarships for students out there.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to college scholarships for students is that it never hurts to apply.  Your junior and senior years are busy times in high school; but scholarships can help pay for college, which can affect not ony which college or university you attend, but also how muhc money you have to pay back in college loans after you graduate.

What kinds of scholarships are there?

If you've ever wondered why there are so many Web sites devoted to scholarships, it's partially because there are so many school scholarships out there, from scholarships for specific fields of study (like nursing scholarships) to scholarships for specific students (such as scholarships for women, older students, students with disabiities, etc.).

A number of college scholarships are also awarded to students who excel in academics, as well as in music, community service, language or vocational skills.  Students with personal affilitations, such as the military or religious groups, are also able to receive scholarships towards their college education from these groups.

What's required in a scholarship application?

Because of the many different kinds of scholarships, each scholarship application can vary greatly.  In many cases, you wil be required to submit information about your high school education and financial circumstances.  This could mean providing tax returns, financial aid forms, your high school transcript and scores from your standardized tests.

You may also be asked to supply letters of recommendation and to write essays stating why you're deserving of the university scholarship.  If you're required to submit letters of recommendation, choose writers who know you well  and can speak positively about why you're the right person for that specific scholarship.

Similarly, as you're writing your essay, make sure the personal accomplishments and thoughts you express relate in some way to the specific scholarship you're seeking.  In order to receive an award, the scholarship provider needs to believe not only that you're a deserving person but also that you're the right person for that specific award.

College Planning and Research:
Begin your search for scholarships NOW!

Getting a head start in finding and applying for college scholarships has never been as accessible as it is now.  There is a plethora of information to be found through brochures, books, and of course, the internet.  Knowing which scholarships, websites, etc., to go to can seem daunting.  Students may ask, Where do I start? What do scholarship services and foundations require?  I heard there were crazy scholarships out there, how do I find them?  Do I have to be the valedictorian of my class to get scholarships?  Parents have questions, too, about how to find help to pay for their student's education, such as Can my student access scholarships with lower-than-expected SAT or ACT scores?  Is there financial support if my student takes AP or IB classes?  Are there ways to lower college application fees?
Important tips for students:
  • Include your parents in this important journey.  Involve them in your search for colleges and scholarships
  • Find out when and schedule your SAT and/or ACT assessments.  The sooner you take these assessments, the sooner you will know the results.  If you feel anxious about test-taking, you might want to consider scheduling a second test date.  By the way - vocabulary is key to success in preparing for these assessments.
